hammocks

One day, when I just turned 14, I slept for a couple of hours on a hammock strung up between two tress in Clarksville, TN and I had a crazy dream where my future self (my 29-year-old self for some reason) came back to tell me exactly what to do to succeed in life.  As the days and years progressed I always remembered that dream and sometimes had recurring dreams that were similar.

Just a dream, I know.  And yet, with my coaching and hypnosis clients one big technique I use is to have them create clearly defined outcomes, and then to take action to achieve the goal.

One trouble with all that “time travel” – not the good kind where you set real goals and make them happen – but with all the “would have, should have, could have” stuff, is that you really can’t predict ALL the variables in your life that lead you to make the decisions that you do. Part 5

“The last phase is to integrate.

This last element is where you create a seamless integration of the previous 4 steps, where when you set your intention to accomplish something, you no longer have to wonder about what step to take first, where you jump in with both feet, make decisions and take actions like a true leader.

This is where you hold yourself accountable for your own well-being. And you have the wisdom enough to recognize where you could use guidance from others, perhaps even a coach.

This is also where you realize that it’s okay to fake it ’till you make it. And don’t just fake it until you make it, fake it until you become it.

They say “practice makes perfect”. I prefer to simply say that practice makes you better at whatever you’re practicing. Continue Reading…

Part 4

“The next part is what I’ll call “Flow”.

By flow I mean go with the flow, and to adapt to evolving situations.

So far now we’ve gotten clear, done some research, taken actions – and what always happens next? Challenges and obstacles will present themselves to you in one form or another.

Some people get discouraged at this point. I suggest that since you know there will be challenges ahead, get ready to meet them.

Whenever we embark on a new venture there will always be people at our lives who are naysayers. Sometimes these will be people that we trust who under the guise of giving you advice will actually be giving you discouragement. And then sometimes our challenges will be financial or technological.

This phase of our growth is where we learn to ignore the naysayers, discern the difference between good advice and pessimism, And to continue forward because we know our goals are worthy.

Again, it might not be easy. So when it’s useful for you, you could think about that person who is great about being slippery when getting out of touch situations, who is skilled at avoiding obstacles, who is calm and composed in the middle of the seeming noise and chaos that others will try to create when we are on the path of achieving goals.

And importantly, as you avoid these challenges, you have a demeanor capable of recognizing friends and allies.”

“Next is stage is to Connect

This is where you Take action. I understand, you’ve probably heard that 1000 times. But the reason for that is because it’s consistently true. One of the best ways that I find to really get fired up and to feel good about my plans is to actually take action, any action, big or small.

At this point you know your goals are clear, you’ve already thought about possible ways of accomplishing your goals, So what better way is there to continue but to make some progress of any kind and to get that momentum going.

And again, who can you think of in your experience, real or fictional, that is a master of taking action quickly and decisively? Perhaps that person is even you… In any case, embody those positive qualities of a leader ready to take action based on clear goals and good research

So whether it’s just putting up a new website, starting a business, doing something positive for your close relationships, Actually do something positive right now that you can feel proud of.”

Part 1

“Hey everybody, Ethan Time here. In this video I’m going to show you a five step framework that I use with my coaching clients that is really effective at helping them achieve change both internally and externally when setting goals.

This framework comes from both the old-school meditative warrior mindset techniques that I’ve learned in my study teaching Japanese jujitsu, and also contemporary life coaching techniques that I suspect you will find somewhat familiar.

Where some of these ancient techniques have lined up well with contemporary techniques, I’ve extracted the essence of some of these methods that have proven both effective with me in my own use and also have been highly effective with my clients in both conversational coaching and in some more specialized methods such as hypnosis.

I chose wording that you will find familiar, and as you work with me I think that you’ll find my approaches fairly unique.

For now I’m just going to give you the framework and some easy-to-follow examples. We can really deep dive into this stuff together when you head over to my blog at EthanTime.com and subscribe to my newsletter.

The first phase of this framework is Command.

Stage one is laying a foundation fundamentally for everything that you do. On a very visceral level you are grounding yourself when you want to or when you have to due to external circumstances.

Another way of putting it is that you get focused, for instance when you’re looking into your future and creating clearly defined outcomes and goals.

This is where you learn to settle down, or to take firm command of your surroundings.

When I was a kid and I would be getting overly emotional about something, my mother would say, “Take a deep breath and count to 10.” So simple, and yet so practical, right? Whether you need to settle down or just take command of your physiology, it’s good to just breathe and assess the situation.

One useful tool is to think of a time when you felt totally confident and in command. What was your posture like? How were you breathing at the time? Do that now and even see if you can think the same thoughts right along with what you’re doing physically. How does that change your current experience?

It can also be useful to think of someone you know, a real person or fictional character, who personifies confidence, command or stability.

Maybe you think of Superman, or Brendon Burchard on stage in command of his knowledge and environment.

What would either of those guys be thinking? How would they be breathing? What would their posture be like?

Even back in my days studying acting, we were taught to act “as if” we already knew what it would be like to embody those qualities.”

I’ve had a love and pain relationship with running. I love to do it, but my left hip usually flares up and causes me pain all the way down to my knee and ankle and I end up having to take extended time away from it.

Following the recommendations of various trainers, I tried many styles of shoes in my attempt to avoid the hip pains. Some shoes worked better than others at different times. My Brooks were great for sure, but the styles I tried felt too bulky. I went the opposite direction and actually had better luck with Nike Free’s.

Then after I saw a Facebook post about a friend’s run with Vibram Five Fingers a couple of years ago I thought I’d do a little research. Eventually a training partner and I both took the leap and got some Vibrams.

The First Experience

The first time out was awkward. I spent more time trying to adjust my foot strike to a more forefoot landing from a heel strike. It’s actually not difficult, but old habits die-hard, as they say (or was it old Hobbits?). Continue Reading…

There are a great many ways that I work with clients.  Whether I’m working in small groups or one-on-one, I always get to know my clients so well that I can personalize my coaching and hypnosis sessions.

Even when I do that, there is a solution framework theme that I like to teach to clients when they’re practicing success techniques, self-hypnosis, and group coaching.

Below is a framework that I think you will find useful.

Focus

You need to clearly define your goals prior to jumping into a big task. Figure out right now what success will actually look like to you.

If you don’t get clear about what success truly is, you run the risk of not knowing when you’ve succeeded or when you need to change your strategy in order to succeed.

Find your focus.  Let’s get real here. When you’re hoping to be the next big Internet guru, affiliate marketer, Tony Robbins, or Steve Jobs, it would be wonderful to wake up tomorrow suddenly successful, right? - Like taking the right colored pill in that Matrix movie, it would be great to just wake up seeing life the way it is and then hook yourself up to some device where one minute later you open your eyes exclaiming, “I know kung fu!”

But in your sober moments you know that it IS possible to be the next Steve Jobs, but you’ll need to set out on the road of finding all the smaller successes on your way to world domination.

Focus is truly a gift you can give to yourself. So what do I mean and what are the benefits?

Be as specific as you can. What do you really want? If you say to me, “lots of money.” I’d say, “Me too.” But that just isn’t clearly defined. Getting clear would be more like this,

I want to double my income in the next 18 months by working hard on this Internet side-project until it starts making money for me with the following 3, 6, and 12 month milestones. They are…

Get it? The more clear the goal is, the more doable it will seem. The more doable it seems, the more likely you are to engineer all the right steps you’ll need to take to accomplish your task. And the more you do that, the more you’ll succeed at step 2, which is…

Evolve

Being flexible in your approach and doing your research, followed by decisive action is a big deal. Evolve is multi-faceted.

First, evolve means taking yourself from the lack of knowledge of how to accomplish something to having tons of knowledge. Learning and getting creative. Being logical and artistic. After getting focused, taking a scientific approach to what your next steps will be is very important. This is where you make your plans in meaningful ways.

Second, take action. You need to test your knowledge in ways that further your goals. Do stuff and make stuff happen. It doesn’t matter how large or small your action is, the point is to do stuff and create momentum. Trial and error also feed the previous step of learning, which leads to…

Third, adapt and improvise. As internal and external challenges arise, you will learn and take action. You will become adept at improvisation and you will get better and better at making quick decisions. You will look and feel like a leader. Mistakes truly become learning experiences and your actions yield more successful results.

Succeed

Having gotten your goals clear and taken a dynamic approach to getting what you want, you might find that rewarding yourself for even the tiniest successes is a good thing. Further, you’ll find that you have new goals to accomplish, so just being on the path to successes is the very goal itself.

Reward reward reward. It’s easy to feel defeated before you even realize that you’ve achieved successes. You might have a dozen small things to feel grateful for, but if you haven’t yet made that fortune, or opened that business, or whatever your goal may be, you could feel deflated. So, reward yourself for even the tiniest successes.

Tip for Focus when you’re in a tight spot.

Mindset

Imagine a time when you’ve felt absolutely confident.

Occasionally someone will tell me at this point, “I’ve never felt confident in my life.” Usually when I then ask, “Are you sure about that? You’ve never felt confident in your life?” they respond, “I’m positive.” So if you’re one of those people, I’d like you to feel confident that you’ve never felt confident. Now back to business…

I’d like you to imagine a time when you’ve felt absolutely confident. Take a few moments to really pick a memory (or the present moment) when you’ve felt confident. Got it? You might also feel “in charge” or “grounded.”

What is your physical posture like in this memory? Your breathing? Go ahead now and adopt that posture, breathing, and allow yourself to embody that idea… that you are confident, grounded and sure.

As you remember that confident time, and feel the breathing, moving into the posture, notice what happens to your mindset. Some other people might try to resist feeling confident to make a point to those around them, but not you – no need to resist, you’re doing this on purpose, allowing yourself to become more and more in command of the present moment.

What is that like to be confident? We all have experiences of confidence. Some people have been managers in charge of employees, or parents who know what’s best for their kids Or children who know more than their parents.

Confidence abounds, does it not? You could be driving a car on a route you always travel and you are confident about getting there. You have made decisions and are sticking to them.

How many examples of confidence, grounded and in charge can you think of? It’s worthwhile to take some time to daydream right here and now.

Great. You’ve found those memories of confidence. Observe again your posture in that memory. Adopt that now.

How was your breathing different? Even tiny differences. Breathe that way now.

What words did you say to yourself? Use that in-command language to yourself now.

And as you continue to breathe, remember that it’s not important to immediately feel 100% confident, but allow it it develop over a short time. And as you allow it to become a part of you again. Enjoy noticing the larger changes that accompany even the tiniest changes.

Rebel Mojo

January 7, 2012 — Leave a comment

I’ve been hard at work on my new project that I’ve lovingly dubbed “Rebel Mojo”.  I’m not done yet, but I can hardly wait to share with you this fantastic new program.  I’ve been coaching individuals and groups for many years, and I’ve trained people in the arts of hypnosis, persuasion and coaching. Now I’ve decided to integrate them more fully into a program where you can learn what you want to learn, and apply it to any area of your choice.

  • You want to learn persuasion and hypnotic language skills without having to read through volumes of texts, and hundreds of research papers.
  • You don’t want to have to reinvent the wheel or spend so much time reading that you don’t have time to actually practice the skills that are relevant to you.
  • You don’t want to have to spend thousands of dollars on certification programs that don’t actually get you anywhere legally or professionally.
  • You do want the information in multimedia, easy to access formats so that you can read, watch or listen at your own convenience, just the skills that you want to work on that day, week, month, etc…

Your learning should be thorough, but not overdone.
It should be comprehensive, while leaving out obscure techniques used only by licensed professionals in therapeutic settings.

And there is a TON out there you could try to learn.  Believe me, I started reading that stuff (and kept going) and I know that most of it isn’t for the general public.  I’m a geek, so I like to read medical publications and studies, but most of it isn’t directly relevant to me neither.

So I took the time to sift out the stuff that is useful for everyday persuasion, coaching and learning.  I’ve been doing that for a long time and now almost I’m ready to share it.  I have all the skills, and I’m an excellent trainer and coach, I just want to get your classroom in order.

You’ll soon have access to Rebel Mojo, a super simple to use online learning portal.  As-in, a website with stuff on it to learn.

Why call it Rebel Mojo?  Well, for one I like the word Mojo.  You can Google “Mojo” if you want, but I’ll tell you what it means for us: self-confidence, mettle, positive attitude, a magic spell.  And you’re a Rebel because like me, you’re going to buck the system and not pay too much to learn some serious Mojo Skills.

You will have your pick of learning from me and my site:

  • Rapport Skills
  • Conversational Persuasions Methods
  • Coaching Others
  • Coaching Yourself
  • Covert Hypnosis
  • Formal Hypnosis Techniques
  • Dating Techniques (The good, self-confidence builders, not the creepy manipulative ones)
  • And more as time passes…  I just can’t stop myself.
I’ve discovered that there’s a great deal of confusion out there in one of my fields of expertise.  I think this is because of some very good reasons.  The world of personal empowerment is rife with so many people who are less than authentic, who are training people to use very hypnotic linguistic patterns to manipulate others in what I consider unethical ways; pick up artists learning to influence women in creepy ways, sales trainers learning similar skills, and coaches out there practicing far beyond their areas of expertise, sometimes venturing into areas of psychotherapy that have been reserved for licensed practitioners.
All that can change for you with Rebel Mojo and learning directly from me.  It’s all good.  It’s all authentic.  I’m down to earth and accessible, so you’ll be able to ask questions and get answers.  I’m not some Internet/international/big time guru.  I’m an ordinary guy who, by accident, stumbled across life changing, meaningful personal empowerment techniques.  (By Tony Robbins, if you must know.  You can read some of my personal story here.)Okay, I know you’re interested, and I’m so very much looking forward to teaching you how to do what I do.
